Speed up your Computer

15 Tips To Speed Up Your Computer

Finding ways to speed up your computer is the most important thing you could do as a computer user. This might save your computer from being thrown out the window, or even smashed up with a hammer. This is how far people get pushed when computers don't do what they computers don't do what they want them to do. It is one of those annoying little things that you have to do all the time, maintenance jobs, just to speed up your computer.

When you have a slow computer and you are trying to work on it, you can easily get frustrated to the point of doing something drastic! Hey but clam down ! I have to tell you something truthfully. It's your fault that your computer is slow because you do not perform computer maintenance on it. It is your responsibility to speed up your computer and make it run an its optimal performance. Don't go blaming the computer because it is slow, follow these steps below and fix your problem now!

15 tips on how to speed up your computer

Delete unwanted files

When I says to delete unwanted files, I do not mean you should go around your computer and delete any file you do not want. In this case, I'm talking about the files that you have created yourself, and are totally aware of what  they are. For example if you created a Microsoft word document and you no longer need it, and never will, then I suggest you delete that file. This is the kind of junk that clogs up your computer. You have a ask yourself, " Do you really need it?"

Files that you have created such as documents and image files can be safely deleted by going to the file on your computer, right clicking on its, and choosing delete from the menu. Keeping your computer or organized and junk free, is a great way to speed up your computer.

please see

Delete hidden junk files

Hidden or temporary files are created without the user knowing. All you have to do is open files, browser the Internet, Install programs, and more files are created in the background. There is so much happening in the background that most people are unaware of and do not know that this area exists. This is something you are going to have to learn about if you want to speed up your computer.

Remove Unwanted Programs

Are you one of those people that constantly download programs and install them on to your computer? Every software program you have on your computer is taking up space. It is not only taking up space, but it might also be checking for updates and connecting to the Internet. It also might be starting up when your computer starts up. There are so many good reasons why you should remove unwanted programs.

After you have removed the software program that you did not want, make sure you restart your computer the process.

Defrag to speed up your computer

When you install programs and save files on your computer, the files are automatically saved to the closest available space on your hard drive. This means that files for your programs are fragmented if your hard disk drive is not organized correctly. This is why we need to de-frag our computer to place the files back together and to place the most frequently used files at the front for  easy access.
You should defrag your computer at least once a week if you use your computer often. If you do not use your computer that often then you can defrag less often.
If you are using the Windows disk defragmenter which is located at start menu>>Accessories>>System tools>>disk  defragmenter, you can choose to "analyze" first before you choose defrag. This feature will tell you if you need to perform this task or not.
Disk Clean Up
Disk CleanUp comes free with Windows and will get rid of the rest of the junk files that you have missed. Go to Start menu>>Accessories>>System tools>>Disk Cleanup.

Always pay for a virus program!

By all means, you can waste your time trying to find the best free anti-virus program, but do you really want to risk it.

Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with a free anti-virus program. In fact I will recommend Avast as my number one freebie. However, even though this provided to be secure, it is safer to have the extra security features that come with the paid versions. Now days most new antivirus also come with a firewall that if they do not, Windows provides a perfectly good firewall for free.

Over the past 25 years I have tested at least 10 paid virus programs and have ended up with Avast running on my computer. It does not annoy me, it is not asked be stupid questions that I cannot asnwer, and is not make me deal with difficult settings. I like a peogram that just does its job.

Avoid multitasking with large programs

If you're anything like me, you will have 20 windows open at the same time, with your Internet browser having at least 15 tabs opened as well. Yes I know it is crazy and I/m trying to reform. I have a lot of experience in multitasking and have realized that some programs cannot be open at the same time as others. For example you should not be running a large program like Photoshop or Pinnacle video studio, while running a virus scan at the same time.

How Does Automatic Wireless Network Configuration Work?

By default, windows xp attempts to connect to wireless networks in the following order:
  1. Available networks that are in the preferred network list ( in order of listing)
  2. Preferred networks not in the Available list( in order to listing)
  3. Other networks depending on Advanced settings chosen
In Windows XP with Service pack 2 (SP2), each network (even Preferred networks) can be configured individually to bypass automatic configuration. To enable or Disable automatic configuration on a per- network basis, respectively check or unchecked the "connect When this network is within range" check box within that network's Connection properties.

Wireless XP periodically checks for new available networks. If it finds a new network listed higher in the Preferred set that is enabled for auto configuration, Windows xp will automatically disconnect you from the lesser-preferred network and re-connect you to the more preferred one.

Advanced Automatic Wireless Configuration

By default, windows xp enables its automatic wireless configuration support. Many people mistakenly assume this means your laptop will automatically to any wireless network it finds. That is untrue. By default, windows xp only auto-connects to Preferred networks.

The Advanced button on the Wireless Networks tab of wireless Network Connection properties controls the default behavior of windows xp automatic connections. One option on the Advanced window, " Automatically connect to non-preferred networks", allows windows xp to auto-connect to any network on the Available list, not just Preferred ones. This option is disabled by default.
Is Automatic Wireless Network Configuration Safe to use?
Yes! The Windows xp wireless network configuration system limits automatic connections by default to Preferred networks. Windows xp will not automatically connect to non-Preferred networks such as public hotspots, for example, unless you specifically configure it to do so. You can also enable / disable auto- connection support for individual Preferred network as described earlier.

In summary, the automatic wireless Internet / network connection feature of windows xp allows you to roam between Wi-fi networks at home, school, work or public place with a minimum of hassle and worry.

Automatic Wireless Network Connections in Windows XP

windows xp (either professional or home Edition ) allows you to establish a wireless network connection to Wi-Fi network routers and access points automatically. This feature helps you to make wireless Internet / WiFi network connections more easily with laptop computers and is highly recommended for those who roam between multiple locations.

Does My Computer Support Automatic Wireless Network Configuration?

Not all windows XP computers with wi-fi wireless support are capable of automatic wireless configuration. To verify your windows xp computer supports this feature, you must access its wireless Network Connection Properties:
  1. From the Start Menu, open Windows Control Panel.
  2. Inside Control Panel, Click the "Network Connections" option if it exists, otherwise first click "Network and Internet Connections" and then click "Network Connections".
  3. Finally, right click "wireless Network Connection" and choose "Properties".
In the Wireless Network Connection properties window, do you see a "wireless Networks" tab? If not, your Wi-Fi network adapter lacks so -called windows Zero Configuration feature will remain unavailable to you. Replace your wireless network adapter if necessary to enable this feature.

If you see a "Wireless Networks " tab, click it , and then click the "view wireless Networks" button appearing on that page. A message may appear on the screen as follows:

"Windows cannot configure this wireless connection. If you have enabled another program to configure this wireless connection, use that software....".

This message appears when your wireless network adapter was installed with a software configuration utility separate from windows xp. The windows xp automatic configuration feature cannot be used in this situation unless the adapter's own configuration utility is disabled, which is generally not advisable.

Enable and Disable Automatic Wireless Network Configuration

To enable automatic configuration, ensure the "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings " check box is checked on the wireless Networks tab of the Wireless Network Connection Properties window. Automatic wireless Internet / Wi-Fi network configuration will be disabled if this checkbox is unchecked. You must be logged on with windows XP administrative privileges to enable / disable this feature.

What Are Available Networks?

The Wireless Networks tab allows you to access the set of "Available" networks.Available networks represent those active networks currently detected by windows xp.Some Wi-Fi networks may be active and in range but not appear under Available networks. This occurs when a wireless router or access point has SSID broadcast disabled.

Whenever your network adapter detects newly available Wi-F- networks, you will see an alert in the lower- right corner of the screen allowing you to take action if necessary.

What Are Preferred Networks?

In the wireless Network tab, you can build a set of so-called "preferred" networks when automatic wireless configuration is active. This list represents a set of known Wi-Fi routers or access point you wish to automatically connect to in feature. You can "Add" new networks to this list by specifying the network name (SSID) and appropriate security settings of each.

The order Preferred networks are listed here determines the order that Windows XP will automatically attempt when seeking to make a wireless / Internet connection. You can set this order to our preference, with the limitation that infrastructure mode networks must appear ahead of all ad hoc mode networks in the Preferred list.

Top 5 Wireless Routers

Top 5 Wireless routers- best selelrs in Amazon in networking - router category - most popular wireless N routers with five star average ratings
with a bunch of wireless routers available in the market today, it is obviously confusing the way you choose which one is the best for your need. Wireless router is the heart of your home wireless network to share the internet connection and other networking tasks. Unlike wired network which the connectivity performs well with least interference, wireless network is prone to any types of signal attenuators within its network coverage. Any sources of signal attenuators (including 2.4 GHz-based wireless home appliances, concrete walls, file cabinets etc) can degrade the performance of your wireless connection significantly.

Wireless router manufacturers introduce their new new router products powered by the latest wireless 802.11n technology, dual band support and embedded with gigabit interfaces for both LAN and WAN Ethernet ports delivering high speeds of up to 300Mbps or even faster up to 450Mbps. But remember, the speed specification are in ideal conditions. In the real world, you never reach those speeds due to many factors and environment conditions. Unlike wired connection, the wireless network is prone to any type of signal attenuator sources that can causes the wireless connectivity issues. Moreover, wireless network shares the bandwidth. The more wireless clients connect to the network, the more traffic shares the bandwidth that makes each connection getting slower. So if you are planning to purchase a wireless router, listen from others who have experiences with the products and read what their opinion about the products.
Without including the legacy wireless routers, the following top 5 wireless routers are currently become the best seller in Amazon in networking - router category.

1. MediaLink Wireless N150 Router

You will be surprised if you read the customers reviews about this router. Nearly 90% out of the customer reviews give averagely 5 star ratings for easiness of the installation, value for money, attractiveness, and technical support.

    Wireless Troubleshooting

Building a wireless network at home is quite easy particularly when you use the all-in-one modem router devices that function as modem, router, wireless access point and the switch. Technically you just need to connect the cable/ DSL  modem port to the Cable / DSL line and one phone call to the ISP where you sign-up the Internet services, then your wireless network should go live. But sometimes it is not that simple, wireless network problem occasionally happen. Fortunately, you can usually do the wireless troubleshooting and solve here problems yourself.

Wireless troubleshooting in most cases is a matter of going through a series of steps to eliminate potential issues one by one before you finally find the problem as general includes three general steps, isolating your problem, troubleshooting the problem, and ,if necessary , contracting the right organization fpr support.

    Isolating Networking Problem

Before you do the wireless troubleshooting, you need to localize or isolate what the underlying of the wireless network problem is. A typical home networking includes three layers - the internet, the modem / router, and the computers on your network. These three layers can be described as shown in the following figure.
you must first identify which network layer is causing the problem, before you can effectively troubleshoot a problem.

Although you can fix most problems yourself, knowing which layer is causing
the network or wireless network problem will help you contract the right organization for support only if you can't fix the problem yourself.

Follow the steps below to identify which layer is causing the problem:
    1.  Click Start ==> Control Panel ==> Click Network and Internet Connections
    2. Under Network and Internet connection ==> Click Network Connection
    3. Now you can examine the status of your network adapter under this Network Connections window with the following possibilities:
A> Connected status but cannot access the internet

Have a look at this status that applies both to the wired adapter and Wireless adapter.

    Local Area connection connected status

Wired or Wireless network problem with this symptom indicates that the computer is properly connected to the modem and router, or if you are using the wireless adapter your computer is connected properly to the wireless network. There must be an internet problem.

Wired /Wireless troubleshooting this kind of wired / wireless network problem can be done by following the steps below.
    1. Verify if you can't connect to the internet by opening your browser and attempt to connect some websites such as xp-twiks.blogspot.com or whatever. If you can find that some websites open successfully but certain websites fail, then you have no wired or wireless network problem. If you cannot open all the websites, then follow the next step.
    2. Unplug the modem and wait a minute, then plug it back again.
    3. Unplug the wireless router to the modem, if you have separate modem and wireless router. Wait a minute and then plug your modem back in again.
    4. Restart the computer. Try again with some websites and see if it is successful. If it is successful but the connection is significantly slow while the other computers ( if there are some computers on the network), you can suspect that there are some computers consulting too much of your Internet bandwidth or attempting to connect to too many computers. For your wireless troubleshooting, close the applications, or configure it to use less bandwidth or fewer connections or shutdown all other computers and make a test again as in step 1.
    5. If you have separate modem and wireless router, disconnect the wireless router and connect the computer directly to the modem. Restart the computer. if the computer is now connecting to the internet successfully, you have problem with the wireless router.
    6. If this last step is still no luck, then your modem is problem or your ISP is in problem.contact the ISP for support.
B> The NIC or the wireless adapter is disabled

    disable state connection

Wired or wireless network problem with this symptom is due to the NIC / wireless adapter in disable status. There must be someone or probably you have manually disabled the network adapter. You need to enable the adapter to fix it by right clicking the icon and select the Enable.

      C> limited or no connectivity
      Limited Connectivity Status

This indicates limited or no connectivity. This is basically no problem with the computer, connection to the router - modem or wireless network is OK but the router is configured incorrectly, or there is a problem between your modem and the internet.

Limited or No Connectivity problem could be due to different problems, including a failed Internet connection, the router or the adapter is not configured correctly. Follow the steps below for wireless troubleshooting.
      1. Right click the adapter in the network Connections window, and then click Repair.
      2. Unplug your modem and wait a minute, and then plug your modem back in again.
      3. If you have a router connected to your modem, unplug it and wait a minute, and then plug the router back in again.
      4. Restart the computer.
      5. Up to this steps your adapter still shows "Limited or No Connectivity" ,make sure that the router has DHCP server feature enables. DHCP server provides the IP address automatically to the computer clients on the network. Restart the computer.
      6. If the modem and the wireless router are two separate devices, disconnect between the modem and the router and connect the computer directly to the modem. Restart the computer and see if it fixes the problem.
      7. If still no luck, connect your ISP for support. The "Limited or No Connectivity" error message indicates that your computer is properly connected to your home network; however, the ISP's DHCP server is not assigning it an IP address. This problem could be caused by a failer DHCP server on the ISP's network, a failed modem, or a problem with your Internet connection. Probably the ISP will provide a static IP address for you.
      D>The Cable is Unplugged
      Cable Unplugged Status

This indicates that the cable is Unplugged, no connection to your modem or router.
      1. Check the network cable if it is unplugged.
      2. If the network cable is properly plugged into the port, try to swap into different port of the modem-router. Check the light indicator in the modem or router and see if the light is blinking on the corresponding port when you swap the cable to the port.
      3. If still no luck, replace the network cable with the good one.
      4. If still no luck, while the other computers that connect to the same modem / router are fine, then your computer NIC adapter is faulty. Replace the NIC adapter.
E> Wireless adapter cannot connect to the wireless network

No Connection to the wireless network

This indicates that the computer cannot connect to the wireless network. There are two reasons that the adapter cannot connect to the wireless network, unable to make successful wireless connection or intermittent  connectivity.

      SBG6580 CABLE MODEM WIRELESS ROUTER

mplementing a wireless network in homes or small offices becomes the busiest tasks today among other networking tasks. This is due to the abundance of affordable wireless router and access points available in market today. Wireless networks have apparent benefit - no wires , no hassle a running a network cable to build the infrastructure as opposed to wired network. The easiest method to build a wireless network in home, if you subscribe a cable services, is to install the Surfboard  SBG6580 cable modem wireless router.

The surfboard SBG6580 cable modem wireless router is an all- in - one device that includes all the requirements to build a wireless network in home or small offices. To build a wireless network, you require a modem (cable or ADSL), a router / firewall, a switch and a wireless access point.A router / firewall is used mainly for network protection against any threat and help you share a single internet connection, a wireless access point is used to extend the wired network without the wires. The Surfboard SBG6580 integrates the routerd, the DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem and the wireless N access point into a single device, the all-in-one device for all your wireless networking environments.

      Cable Modem Function

The surfboard SBG6580 is a DOCSIS 3.0 / EuroDOCSIS 3.0 cable modem a new generation of the DOCSIS / EuroDOCSIS infrastructure which enables channel bonding of up to 8 downstream channels. This allows the service providers to offer their customers advanced multimedia services delivering the high speeds of up to 300Mbps in DOCSIS and up to 400Mbps in EuroDOCSIS for downstream and up to 100Mbps for upstream.
      Firewall / Router Function

Like other wireless routers, the Surfboard SBG6580 cable modem wireless router supports dual firewall feature(NAT and SPI). Network Address Translation (NAT) helps the private network hide from the public network and allow you share a single broadband internet connection with many computers in the network. Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) filter the incoming traffic from the internet more through deep into the packet for false positive packets.

The router includes the DoS (Denial of Services) and malware protection. The modem also supports the routing function including static route and dynamic routing (RIPv1, RIPv2). This is the second requirement for your network.
      High Speeds

The Surfboard SBG6580 cable modem wireless router is powered by the latest wireless 802.11n technology with dual band support. Unfortunately it is a selectable dual band, not simultaneous. It means that the router will operate in single band in a time either in 2.4GHz or 5GHz band. If you have mix wireless devices with different operating bands. If you except the router to accommodate all the devices for example your iPad, 5GHz-based XBOX adapter, your notebook with 2.4GHz wi-fi adapter and other smart-phones, you'll be sorry. The modem can only work in single band either in 2.4GHz (for your smart-band) band. If you have uniform wireless adapters that supports 5GHz band, that'll be great for maximum data throughput.

The modem includes 4xGigabit Ethernet ports to let you connect up to computers with 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports. Brand new computers today are equipped with gigabit Ethernet ports you can connect to the routers using the Cat5e UTP cable for reliable wired connections.

To provide the IP address configuration automatically, the modem inccludes a DHCP server that will provide IP address leases to the clients on the network. This will help you reduce the administrator overhead.

      Security

Wireless connections is prone to the eavesdropping by the users within the network coverage.Therefor you need to encrypt the connection by the industrial wireless security WPA/WPA2 (Wireless Protected Access). The Surfboard SBG6580 cable modem wireless router supports wide range of security including WEP-64/128, WPA-PSK, WPA, WPA2, TKIP,AES,802.1x, 802.11i (pre-authentication). For secure client connection to the network, the device supports user-friendly WI-FI protected setup (WPA) to easily connect with WPS compatible device.

      INtroduction to network File sharing

Computer network allows you to share files with friends, family, coworkers and customers. Before the Internet and home networks became popular, files were often shared using floppy disks. Nowadays , some people still use CD-ROM/DVD-ROM disks and USB keys for transferring their photos and videos, but networks give you more flexible options.

Network file sharing is the process of copying files from one computer to another using a  live network connection. This article describes the different methods and networking technologies available to help you share files.

       File Sharing with Microsoft windows

Microsoft windows (and other personal computer operating systems) contain built-in features for file sharing. For example, Windows file folders can be shared across a local area network (LAN) or the Internet using the Explorer interface and network drive mappings, You can also setup security access restrictions that control who can obtain the shared files.

      FTP File Transfers

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is an older but still popular method to share files on the Internet. A central computer called the FTP server holds all the files to be shared, while remote computers running FTP  client software can log in to the server to obtain copies.

All modern computer systems contain built-in FTP client software, and popular Web browsers like Internet Explorer can also be configured to run as FTP clients. Alternative FTP client programs are also available for free download on the Internet. As with windows file sharing, security access option can be set on the FTP server requiring clients to supply a valid username and password.

New cisco Router supports 322Tbps, Designed for Internet video

what can you do with 322Tbps? Cisco systems says it's enough bandwidth to allow every person in china to make video call - simultaneously. And if that's something you want to do, Cisco says it now has hardware capable of task.

The company's newest large-scale core router, the CRS-3, is capable of handling such a speed, which Cisco said is 12 times as fast as its closest competitor and the three times the speed of its predecessor. it has invested $1.6 billions in the product's design and engendering.

The CRS-3, is the product that Cisco last month said would " forever change the internet and its impact on consumers ,businesses and governments."

CRS stands for "Carrier Routing System" a reference to the devices use by large telecom provider.

Tbps stands for terabits-per-seconds and a terabit is a trillion bits. compare that to the megabits-per-second that today's highest speed business and consumer broadband connection are measured in.

      LAN - Local Area Network

Definition:-A Local Area Network (LAN) supplies networking capability to a group of computers in close proximity to each other such as in an office building, a school , or a home. A LAN is useful for sharing resources like files, printers, games or other applications.A LAN is turn often connects to other LANs, and to the Internet or other WAN.

Most LANs connect workstations and personal computers. Each node (individual computers)  in a LAN has its own CPU with which it executes programs, but it also is able to access data and devices anywhere on the LAN. This means that many users can share expensive devices., such as laser printer as well as data.Users can also use the LAN to communicate to each other, by sending email or engaging chat sessions.

      1) Steps to prevent / solve this no desktop icons problem.
Completely check the system for viruses first using updated antivirus.

      2) First go to task manager--> file --> new task--> type explorer.exe and click ok.

      3) Still problem not solved then search for explorer.exe in your system and back up that file.

      4) Take a explorer.exe from your neighborer or friends system and replace the existing
      explorer.exe to new file.

      5) Still problem not solved.
Go to Control Panel --> user account-->Create new user-->give administratorrights-->and delete old user.

      6) Now problem is solved.

What are the first step needed when your system is attacked by virus

I am going to share about the first important steps to prevent the system, when the system is attacked by virus. (these steps also helps to improve your system performance and speed).

      1) Go to task manager (by pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL).

      2) Go to process tab.

      3) Now you have to find the unwanted.exe files and end process that.
some tips to find these unwanted.exe process
      * Find the .exe process runs under your username (but not as system / local
      services /network service).
      * then ignore the process such as explorer.exe, antivirus process(for example if
you install avg it runs as avgtray, wuauclt), applications name.
      * Then endprocess all other unwanted.exe process for example: regsvr.exe,
      autorun.inf, etc..

      4) Now go to start-->search then search for .exe, .inf files in your computer and delete the unwanted files.

(Note : These are the manual steps to delete the virus. My suggestion is install any antivirus such as avg, avast,Bit defender and update that frequently).
